Online Safety Tips
This website and the tools you will be using in this project are using open websites that all the world can see... There are advantages in that you can use these resources at any time, anywhere on the internet BUT it also means lots of other people can see what you write. So here are a few tips to consider when you post information.

Tip No. 1

Don't write your email address on a web page... (It's okay when you join a site). Spammers can use computers to scan for any emails they find on websites and once they get your address then your email gets filled with junk mail!! If you really do want to share your email you can write it so computers can't automatically pick it up. Leave out the @ symbol instead write the address with the word 'at'. A human can replace the word 'at' with @ when they type the email. But I would err on the side of caution and not put your email out on the web for all to see.
Here is an example of my email written more safely vivian.evans at tafensw.edu.au

Tip No. 2

Don't share your personal details with people online. Personal stuff includes your messenger id, email address, mobile number etc. Some websites say don't share any pictures of you, your family or friends.
For this website you could be creative... You don't have to use a photo of you - You could use a quirky photo e.g. a hand, a pet, something that links to you a flower, shoes, your artwork. (Join in the discussion thread below of ideas to use as your profile photo)

vivevans Photos for Profiles - we need to consider safe images for online 4 Sep 21 2008, 8:09 PM EDT by MalenyGail

Lets share some ideas for photos we can put in our profiles that don't actually show who we are but perhaps tell something about us.

I have been reading up on internet safety and many websites suggest not putting up photos of you. So let's brainstorm ideas of what we could use photos of (remember that the photo you use should not be copied from someone but be a photo you take or have permission by the original photographer to use)

Okay let's get stuck into the ideas
- collection of nice stones
- a flower
- A corner of your face... eg. ear, forehead
- a musical instrument you play
- Use an animation program to create a character to represent you

What other ideas do you have? So we can inspire all the team

Can't wait to see the ideas and then the pictures!!! (By the way to add a photo to your profile check out our page 'Tips for how to use this website' page.

Cheers Viv
