Select one or more aspects of lifestyle change that you can address (This can be in any aspect of your lifestyle - water use, energy use, home building materials, garden, work, recycling, investment, food, shopping, travel, waste, clothing, entertainment, writing to politicians, councils etc encouraging them to develop ecologically sustainable policies)
Describe the methods you use to measure the level of these aspects at your present lifestyle approach (This may include the use of old electricity bills, before and after photos, electrical meters on the house, household water meters, measurements of distances travelled and litres of fuel purchased, results from the measurement of your ecological footprint. Be creative, think laterally)
Record the measurements with your present lifestyle approach
Describe the strategies you plan to use to address each of the identified aspects (There are heaps of books and websites with endless suggestions. Choose those which you feel you are most able to implement. It may include walking, shorter showers, water-saving shower heads, growing your own vegies and so on.)
Record a measure of each aspect on a regular basis as you apply these strategies over a period of time (at least a fortnight, preferably longer)
Describe the effects of the action plan after the test period (They may be unexpected or a complete failure. Tell us anyway)

These are the ways in which I already contribute to a sustainable lifestyle. Having used the Footprint Calculator you probably realise that you already do quite a lot. We would like to acknowledge this	We visited Rainbow Cottage in Nymbin to show them our plans and to find out if they were ecologically okay. Their only suggestion was to have a small shade over our north-east windows to prevent the early morning sun coming into our home in the early morning. Last year we built a trellis and have covered it with shadecloth until the grape vines planted cover the trellis. Also recently I double-glazed all windows using special plastic used mostly in Canberra. This already seems helpful and will certainly reduce our power all year round.

One possibility is simply to replace a small plastic tank which is leaking and installing an extra one in a different part of our home. Another method would be to instal The UNISA Prototype System at present being investigated by Simon Beecham at The Uni of SA and I have asked for more information on this technique. A third possibility is to install an underground concrete tank and maybe even pumping the water into the house. At present much of our roof water is going into the city's stormwater - I need to find out from Council just what happens to the excess water not going into our two 5000 litre tanks.

Biodiversity can be simply translated as variety of life.

Biodiversity on our planet can be studied from three different angles

Variety of ecosystems (major ones are sometimes called biomes). There are many different types ecosystems on our earth. They can be separated into a few simple groups or into many subgroups. Check your knowledge of major ones - go to Ecosystems on the Internet. Then look at some Australian ones in more detail at our Government Web Site or http://www.gullivermedia.com.au/eco.html

Variety within an Ecosystem. Within one ecosystem the biodiversity can be analysed. Some types of ecosystems have more variety than others. However, a degraded ecosystem will generally have lower biodiversity than a similar healthy one. eg. A coral reef affected by coral bleaching will have a lower biodiversity than a healthy coral reef.

Genetic variety within a species. A healthy population of organisms should have plenty of genetic variety. The greater the genetic diversity, the greater chance the species has of adapting to a changing environment. Species whose populations are below a certain thresh-hold are in danger of extinction.

Welcome to the Learning for Sustainability Website

Learning for Sustainability is a partnerhsip website linking NSWTAFE New England Institute with the Liverpool Plain Land Management Committee, the Namoi CMA and the wider community . It is part of an Innovative E-learning project under the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. This site is evolving and is being built collaboratively. This site is currently set to be open to the World Wide Web for all to see but only members who join and sign into this site are able to edit and contribute to discussions.

Refuse Reduce Re-use Recycle

Refuse
Much of our waste is unnecessary. Send a message to producers and retailers:

Refuse to buy products which are over packaged
Do without that plastic bag
Remove packaging and hand it back

Reduce
Reduce your shopping needs by asking questions such as:

Do I really need that new trinket/shirt/magazine
Can I buy it second hand?
Can I learn to live without the need to change fashion constantly?
Does it come with unnecessary packaging?
Is the waste resulting from this purchase biodegradable?
Is it made from a recycled resource?
Can the item be recycled or re-used?
If I need pampering consider a service such as a massage rather than a "good".

Re-Use
Before you throw away that item consider a possible re-use.

Can it be used as a container?
Can it be used to grow a plant?
Can it be used as a vase?
Can it be used as a dog bowl?
Can it be used as a piece of art?
Can I give it to someone else to use?

Re-Cycle
If it must be disposed of can it be recycled? Common materials which can be recycled are:
Organic waste:

Feed it to the pigs/dog/chooks
Set up a worm farm to recycle paper, vegetation and food scraps into fertilizer
Use it as compost
Drop garden waste off at the waste disposal centre for chipping
Paper and cardboard are collected for recycling at most waste disposal centres

Plastic:

Check whether there is a recycle symbol on the item. eg
Find out which plastics you can recycle at your closest waste facility.
If your nearest town does not recycle, lobby the council involved.

Glass:

Glass is collected by most councils.
Some towns require it to be separated into colours.
Broken crockery usually cannot be recycled.

Metal:

Most metal cans can be recycled. Rinse them at the end of your wash up.

If you don't have waste removal facilities, store recyclable items and take them when you visit town.

Take a photograph of it with its new function.
Post your photo in our Photo Gallery in the 'Recycling Album' (Don't forget to describe what it was and what it is reused now as)

Visit your local waste disposal centre. What do they accept that can be recycled? What recycled material can you buy? eg Road base? Landscape fill? Compost? Mulch? Share your knowledge.

Look up Recycling in your yellow pages. List places where you can take or by second hand items.

All students who want to engage and be assessed for the unit Applying Skills to Emerging Technology need to build themselves a Technology e-Portfolio.

You will create an online Portfolio that allows you and your teacher to track your progress and achievements through your unit. This page is an e-portfolio combined with an online journal so you can comment and reflect on the steps you work through.A way that you can build and keep a record of your progress & achievements throughout your steps in this unit. A way to self assess your progress with the support of your teacher.

This is an online Portfolio that allows me to track my progress and achievements through my course. This page is an e-portfolio combined with an online journal so I can comment and reflect on the steps I work through.A way that I can build and keep a record of my progress & achievements throughout my steps in this unit. About this Project

Project Summary
The General Education and Equity Services faculty of NSWTAFE New England Institute has established a number of networks stemming from an initial instigation of a program in Gunnedah consisting of environmental and sustainability focused modules titled ‘Envirolearn’. This has grown to be a developed state wide approved Statement of attainment in Learning for Sustainability.

Students involved across New England Institute have included farmers, rural land owners, town’s people, indigenous students, learners with disabilities, and varying age groups from all works of life.

So far 4 campuses have taken on this program and adapted to the local needs, there have been local connections with Catchment Management Authorities and various local organisations such as the Liverpool Plains Land Management Committee and Indigenous elders.

Our key business partners want to work with us to increase the potential of empowering students, teachers, partnering organisations, community groups, individuals and the wider community to work towards better knowledge and practical solutions for sustainability.

This project will enable participants to improve people’s recognition of and attitude to Natural resource management issues and appropriate management practices through and alongside developing skills in online connection and collaboration.

Through this project, partnerships could be taken to greater levels with skills and knowledge developed to enhance the communication and collaboration within, between and beyond the involved community groups to the wider community with the goal to continually increase the level of participation in appropriate natural resource management activities.

4 Phases in Project

Phase 1 Hub development and engagement of key partners and teaching team (May – June)

F2F meeting of project team to further develop and fine tune our strategy & program; Engagement in the key communication tools (Adobe connect and wiki); establishment of the key hub; development and experience built by all of using effective web 2 tools; Marketing of the course through partners and RTO. Short weekly/fortnightly meetings online to make sure team is ready for final preparation of the Hub ready July start.

Phase 2 Engagement of students and clients, access and motivation (July – September)

Classes start and engage in the online learning – access, motivation and socialisation key factors at this early point. Particular focus on Core units Draw conclusions from information for study purposes Investigate the principles of ecosystems and sustainability and at this point, with introduction to applying skills for using emerging technology. Online guest speakers and recordings, Field trips to enable participants to meet and see sustainability issues and strategies in action. Students learn online technology skills so they can share their learning; Reflection and review of achievements and issues to be dealt with by core team.

Phase 3 Information exchange and knowledge construction phase (Oct – Nov)

At this point students should be feeling far more comfortable working as a team both offline and online. Group 2, 3 & 4 units can be integrated at this point; Students will be actively applying skills for using Emerging Technology for their other unit work sharing photos, telling stories (voice and text) of field trips, research and own experiences via the open source Web 2 technology. Review of achievements and issues to be dealt with by core team.

Phase 4 Final reflection and feedback phase (Nov/Dec)

Discussions, reflections and surveys of participants, partners and core team of project overall. Where to from here? Are our partner organisations happy with outcomes achieved? Are there more ways we can continue to expand our partnership and partners?

Sustainable Christmas Gift Ideas

Salad box... using recycled polystyrene foam boxes to create a mini garden of herbs and small salad items. Great for the person who doesn't have room for a garden
Vouchers or Promise notes for lovely activities e.g. One voucher for breakfast in bed, One voucher for foot massage, One voucher for washing dishes, mowing lawn etc - Great for kids to give and those low on cash and for those who have everything!
Membership to Diggers Club gardening - for sustainable seeds,
Tea towels - use them to wrap your present. e.g. wrap a bottle of locally produced virgin olive oil and tie with coloured Christmas ribbon
Face cloth - use a facecloth to wrap soap in. Homemade soap is what I used. I tied it with Christmas ribbon.

We are delighted you are going to take this unit on :-) Jane (jjudd10) and Vivian (vivevans) are here to assist you and we both love chocolate!

NSW TAFE Quality Awards

Our project was nominated for the 2008 NSW TAFE Quality Awards. It became the final 4 in the Safety and Environment Category with tough competition.

Judy & Vivian travelled to Sydney to present our project on Thursday 6th November at Rosehill Racecourse. Here are some photos taken at the event which was a very busy day with many people interested in our project and activities on sustainability. Judy and Vivian came home inspired with more contacts, ideas, new members to our site and fired up to take our project further into 2009. Hope you will continue to join us for the collaborative ride. :-)
